About The Artist - Ursula Paniyak
Culture: Cup'ik
From the artist: "At age 10, I began learning to sew traditional Cup'ik Eskimo dolls from my mother, Rosalie Paniyak, a master doll-maker from Chevak, and my grandmother, Mary Kokrak, an accomplished skin-sewer. I have produced dolls and refined methods and materials for more than three decades. I'm inspired by modern Native life in my village of Chevak. I try to make my dolls as realistic as possible, and concentrate on elderly women, mothers and children."
